BOOK BY: Erica Vetsch
A bittersweet read for me! I thoroughly enjoyed the Serendipity and Secrets Regency trilogy by the talented Erica Vetsch. I am sad to finish a series that was highly engaging, and each book as equally intriguing as the first. Erica Vetsch has spun a regency tale that readers will put on their to read again shelf.
The third book, The Indebted Earl, follows the story of Lady Sophia Haverly, sister of the Gentleman Spy. She patiently waits for her fiancée to return from the front, and in the meantime takes care of his ailing mother who appears to struggle with dementia or early onset of Alzheimer’s. Sophia is a selfless character who embodies the meaning of kindness. She’s sweet and everything that a woman of her time would strive to be. She longs for the day her Richard will return so they can be married and start their life together.
Captain Charles Wyvern is a noble hero, though he struggles with self-worth and carries the guilt of being the cause for his best friend’s death. He returns to England to fulfill a death bed promise and in the process finds himself useful to Sophia and Lady Richardson in their time of grief. What follows is a crazy series of events that eventually resolve and present the reader with a satisfactory ending to the entire series.
There are likeable characters and despicable characters which pull the reader along. Familiar characters reappear and play a significant role in the mystery that catches Charles and Sophia by surprise. Of course Marcus wields his super spy powers to help save the day. And then justice is served.
The novel seemed to start out slower than the first two, but a surprise situation is thrust onto Lady Sophia and Lady Richardson that propels the story forward. It was totally unexpected and therefore delightful to read. As if one surprise wasn’t enough, Charles receives a surprise of his own which creates an interesting scenario that serves to push our hero and heroine together for good.
This was a fantastic read and I look forward to reading the entire series again.
